Christopher was merely hours old when he came under our care on the streets in December 2006. His birth was quite unexpected given the fact that his mother, Kata Kaan, had a clipped ear, which meant she was sterilised. Then why did she deliver? This is a common malpractice where animal birth control goes unmonitored, ears are clipped and organs are not counted or tallied. Dogs are left back without surgery so that they continue to deliver.
Christopher’s tiny little barks, swift long tale revolved like a pendulum. That is how we saw him growing up every day when we met.
Soon, Kata Kaan had a clipped ear that was not deceitful of her status. She lived thereon, happily, just for her own self and so did her children, Christopher and Margaret who were eventually neutered and spayed, respectively.
Christopher grew up to be a lanky fellow with a killer smile, just as in this picture. He took the charge of premises of a Bank where he eventually became the leader of the pack.
He was a full of life dog, loved, looked after by us, cared for every single day for 13 years and 8 months.
Then, a reckless driver ran him down. When I had picked him up, I had no idea that they were some of his last hours. A quick vet visit later, wherein the vet did not even bother to check on him, he came home. Those hours I can never forget. Late in the night, he took out blood, not once, but umpteen times. No vet was available to come in an emergency. We wanted his agony to end. It is strange asking for death for a life one loves, but that is what Maa and me did for him. Finally when a vet was arranged, he breathed his last when I had gone to grab my mask. The home fell silent but his blood curdling howls continued to echo in our ears. Is that what Christopher deserved?
