Only a handful of stray dogs get to see senior age. Then, one day, they are conveniently picked up by those who will never show their face, never provide their number and locals will practice omerta. Where the dog has been taken, what for, by whom and why does he/she never come back remains a forever mystery. This happened with our Dholu two days ago, a perfectly healthy for his age, sterilised and vaccinated stray dog. None of the local shelters have him. Dholu was under our care every single day for more than a decade. 7 1
The experience of homing a furless stray dog was unique. Chamgi, who had seen all the muck at the hands of mankind while she was on the streets, had lost all hopes of life. Then, nature conspired and the two of us met for a reason. I did not rescue her, she rescued me because she entered home at a point wherein we had seen two back-to-back deaths at home, that of Butter and Matalu in November 2019. The other canines at home welcomed her with the usual warmth, just as they do when someone very needy has nowhere to go. Unlike us fellow humans, who often judge based on physical appearance, none of the kids bothered that Chamgi had no fur. For them, she was a fellow dog who was as equal and worthy as they were of enjoying the privileges of being homed, loved and cared for. So much to learn from dogs. 9 0
There is too big a NEXUS and MISINFORMATION when we talk about ‘rabies’ and unfortunately, the stray dogs are at the centre of it time and again. 12 0
In every misunderstood stray dog, I see my beloved Tweeky. 11 2

We all need that one friend in life who can lift us up with hope, love and care in the darkest of hours. That is what dearest Wonder, a rescued stray from Udaipur railway station, was to our Ronaldo and Natasha. To Wonder, it just did not matter that his best friends were on three legs, Natasha was still recuperating back then from the amputation surgery post a brutal run down and could barely walk. Dogs never discriminate. Wonder ended up playing the most instrumental role in Ronaldo and Natasha's recovery. It is he who infused back life in them. The trio, black beauties, took our home by storm as they found happiness in each others company, in a true sense there was peace in chaos. 9 0
The pain and void after the loss of a beloved companion animal, whether he/she lived with us at home or we cared for them on the streets is the same. We are never ready to lose an integral part of us that is never going to come back. Those grieving the loss of their companion animal need compassion, moral support and empathy to navigate through the tough time. 9 1
A stray dog turning blind on the roads is usually synonymous with a one-way journey to a shelter for him/her. Why not a home? Blind dogs make wonderful companion animals, they have no special needs. Kaanu, a rescued stray, with half lower jaw missing, has been an integral part of our home for more than two years now. Life is probably bliss for him as he sleeps for twenty-three hours in a day. All the meals are on the bed. He goes for a 3am walk in the night but he does not need my assistance at all. He, like other blind dogs, is great at maths. For the one hour that he is up, he rolls around to play and then holds our hands and sings a beautiful song that together goes as a prayer from us for every senior dog and a blind dog to have a home, to be felt loved and wanted. Let us not turn a blind eye to them ever. 13 1
