I was very lucky to have found my soulmate in Jukjuk, my daughter born from the heart. She was a three months old stray pup when a bike ran over her face and broke her lower jaw in August 2005. Liquid feeds every two hours, painkiller, antibiotics and dressing were the time we spent together bonding. She would just look at me with her beautiful brown eyes that had love of the kind I had never experienced before and never will. All mothers do favouritism, I am no different. All during my undergrad and post grad days we went onto attend classes and write exams together. So when I earned a gold medal and scholarships, I shared them with her. But none of that really mattered to her other than my company and love. That is the beauty of dogs. When I began to teach, she would patiently wait for the classes to get over and then the two of us would sit in the garden, holding hands and paw to spend the evening. All canines would leave after food and petting but she would never leave my side. Her blind love and loyalty. I do not know what had I done to earn so much of love from her. Nothing in the world really mattered when we were together. 11 1
Companion animals, strays or pets, mean family. Our association with them does not come to an end when they leave us, but their physical absence does impact us significantly. How everyone processes grief is different but there is one thing in common; those of us grieving their loss need compassion, moral support and empathy to navigate through. 14 0
Only a handful of stray dogs get to see senior age. Then, one day, they are conveniently picked up by those who will never show their face, never provide their number and locals will practice omerta. Where the dog has been taken, what for, by whom and why does he/she never come back remains a forever mystery. This happened with our Dholu two days ago, a perfectly healthy for his age, sterilised and vaccinated stray dog. None of the local shelters have him. Dholu was under our care every single day for more than a decade. 12 2
The experience of homing a furless stray dog was unique. Chamgi, who had seen all the muck at the hands of mankind while she was on the streets, had lost all hopes of life. Then, nature conspired and the two of us met for a reason. I did not rescue her, she rescued me because she entered home at a point wherein we had seen two back-to-back deaths at home, that of Butter and Matalu in November 2019. The other canines at home welcomed her with the usual warmth, just as they do when someone very needy has nowhere to go. Unlike us fellow humans, who often judge based on physical appearance, none of the kids bothered that Chamgi had no fur. For them, she was a fellow dog who was as equal and worthy as they were of enjoying the privileges of being homed, loved and cared for. So much to learn from dogs. 8 0

There is too big a NEXUS and MISINFORMATION when we talk about ‘rabies’ and unfortunately, the stray dogs are at the centre of it time and again. 11 0
In every misunderstood stray dog, I see my beloved Tweeky. 10 2
